6.7L Powerstroke Intercooler Piping Kit: What It Does and How to Pick One

The 6.7L Powerstroke in the 2011–2022 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty is a capable diesel platform, but the factory intercooler charge piping has a known limitation: it uses plastic and rubber components in the charge air path that are fine at stock boost levels and start causing problems the moment you add more fuel, tune it, or push the engine harder.

An intercooler piping kit replaces the factory plastic and rubber charge pipes with aluminum tubes and reinforced silicone couplers. Here’s what that actually changes and how to pick the right kit for your 6.7.

What the Intercooler Piping Does on a 6.7 Powerstroke

Your 6.7’s turbocharger compresses intake air, which exits the turbo hot and under pressure. That compressed air travels through the intercooler (mounted in front of the radiator) to get cooled down, then flows through the charge pipes to the intake manifold.

The intercooler piping kit covers:

  • Hot side pipe: turbo outlet → intercooler inlet
  • Cold side pipe: intercooler outlet → intake manifold
  • Couplers: silicone connecting sleeves at each joint
  • Clamps: stainless worm-gear or T-bolt clamps securing each coupler

On the factory 6.7, the cold side pipe in particular uses a plastic elbow that is prone to micro-cracking under heat cycling. When it cracks — and it will crack on a tuned engine — you lose boost pressure into the intake tract. Aluminum wall thickness: 0.063" (16-gauge) is the minimum for street/tow use. Thicker is better for competition builds or sustained high-boost applications.

Silicone coupler ply count: 3-ply reinforced silicone handles 35–40 psi without blowoff. 4-ply is worth the premium on built engines.

T-bolt vs. worm-gear clamps: T-bolt clamps apply even clamping force around the full circumference of the coupler. Worm-gear (hose) clamps are cheaper but can cut into silicone under vibration. Go T-bolt on every joint.

Fitment generation: The 6.7 Powerstroke changed significantly between 2011–2014 (Gen 1) and 2015–2022 (Gen 2/3). Confirm the kit is spec’d for your model year — especially the hot side, which changed geometry between generations.

Powder coat vs. bare aluminum: Powder coat protects against corrosion in the underhood environment. Bare aluminum is fine but will oxidize over time. Either works; it’s a cosmetic preference.

When to Upgrade

You don’t need an intercooler pipe kit on a completely stock, untuned 6.7. The factory plastic holds up at stock boost levels.

  • You’re pulling heavy loads (over 15,000 lb GVW) regularly — the sustained boost cycles accelerate plastic fatigue

  • You’re building toward compound turbos or a big single turbo upgrade
